Cardiologists launch the alarm, violence causes cardiomyopathy
The broken heart syndrome is not a memory of romantic literature, it is a very serious disease, studied and cared for by cardiologists.
It is cardiomyopathy and affects almost exclusively women. Also known as Tako-Tsubo syndrome or stress cardiomyopathy, it is mainly found in mourning or traumatic events. In view of the International Day Against Violence Against Women of Tomorrow, Place Cardiologists, Platform of Laboratories for Advanced in Cardiac Experience, the ongoing summit in Rome, warn of the onset of this disease in women subjected to ill-treatment. “In the history of many of the subjects affected, there has been a prolonged emotional stress, typical of situations where women are subjected to maltreatment and abuse, both physical and psychological,” explains Leonardo Calò, Uoc Director of the Casilino Clinic.
“We talk of a disease – he adds – that manifests itself with symptoms very similar to those of myocardial infarction, such as chest pain and sudden distress, and which should not be underestimated since, according to recent studies, it has a mortality rate similar to that infarct “.
